Kinja'd!!!

I’m heading to the Tail of the Dragon in a week for two days of twisty road activity. I’m driving my GTI and meeting up with two motorcyclists. Any tips from the Opposphere?

I’m already figuring on bringing some minor foodstuffs, since we’re staying in Deal’s Gap and there are about four non-fast food restaurants in Robbinsville, from what I can see. And little else nearby.

I’m also going to visit Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest because it is a rare, un-logged forest nearby that many have recommended.

We also have been debating whether I’m the chase car for them, or if it is better for me to clear a path. Or just all do our own things with a plan to meet up at a given time and place.

So, other than to set the DCC to “Sport” and avoid contributing a part to the part tree (especially since my car is leaving !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! just today) . . . any ways to make the trip better?

In my honest opinion, TotD is pretty boring. It’s also very crowded. I’d find a better road if I were to be in the area again. There are a ton of them around there.

Go to a better road? It’s a tourist trap and covered in cops. Any given backroad that leads to the BRP in WNC is better. NC 226 immediately sprngs to mind.

Oh, and also upgrade your brake fluid if you haven’t. You WILL experience brake fade going down those roads.

Invest in some two way radios, have someone go ahead and scout the road for cops before making a run.

ToTD is great....during the week when no one is on it. Weekends it SUCKS.

Do the cherohala skyway and the moonshine run while you are down there

Honestly, the Tail itself is overcrowded and overrated. Go at like the butt crack of dawn, run it down and back, and then go somewhere else. When I went we were there at like 8am and it was already fairly busy.

For all things holy, do not cross the center line. Don’t try and drive over your limits for cool points. It’s still a normal road.

We did the Devil’s Triangle, and it was way better. We only saw like 3 other cars the whole time. There’s a lot of other runs and routes out there, that are worth your time.

There are a ton of other roads in the area. I am heading down there primarily for all of the roads OTHER than the TOTD. But I will drive 129 at least once just to see it for myself.

Driving there Friday, exploring Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday morning. One of the other guys is a big Miata fan, so I’m sure he’ll enjoy seeing your crowd!

Oh yeah, Friday is one of the bigger days for driving around so good odds you will see us at some point. Going to be a solid 2500 mile trip for me. Good thing I just changed my oil lol. Plus I will be camping out the whole time over at Turkey Creek campground in Almond, NC. Hopefully it doesn’t rain too much, I am seeing 60% chance of thunderstorms right now.

I see that you are prepping carefully . And I should look out for an NB blue Miata from New Jersey . I hope you stay dry in the campground, but I would assume a pop-up shower in the afternoons.

Make sure any pictures taken of your car are watermarked. If they’re not, you’ll crash.

Also make sure to stay in your own lane.

In NC by BRP but 226A-226 loop. Not sure where you are coming from but the tarmac was fresh as of last year.
